Recently my business partners and I launched a project aimed at the Australian residential market. It is a joint venture arrangement between Technical Solutions Australasi Ltd and a very large building and construction company out of Australia.
Three things have stood out to me as a result of our efforts:
- There is a disturbing amount of overcapacity in the manufacturing sector here in NZ. CEO’s, Directors and Bid Managers were contacting us sometimes within 30 minutes of submitting NDA documentation to arrange meetings. Subsequent factory visits revealed a lot of sophisticated machinery being under-utilised. They all seemed very anxious to secure long term work well beyond professional engagement…. dare I say it… they were desperate.
- Empty Auckland industrial units. One newish site we went to had 50 per cent occupancy. Solve the housing shortage by converting them to residential I say. Tauranga it seems is no better with the Judea Industrial Estate looking decidedly vacant.
- Seek Ad Engineer: A lot of Australians applied, one Kiwi.
Conclusion: Read Dr Kerry Spackman’s, The Ant and the Ferrari, especially the section Pages 192 onward regarding efficiency and capitalism as a whole .. riveting stuff
